Baseball: Offense, Bullpen Lead to Win in DH Split at Toccoa Falls

A six-run rally early, a three-run burst later, and terrific relief pitching led to a win for TCJ Eagles Baseball in Game 2 of the double-header at Toccoa Falls College on Satruday. Trinity won 10-9, and the win salvaged the final game of the series as Toccoa Falls came from behind late in Game 1 for a 9-5 victory after winning 8-0 on Friday.

Game 2: Trinity 10, Toccoa Falls 9

Gavin Williams lauched a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the top of the 5th to put Trinity ahead 10-9. The blast became the official game-winning hit as Logan McGann scored the tying run on the homer, and Williams finished his trot around the bases with the go-ahead run. Just a few moments eariler, McGann doubled to right to drive in Trace Hoff, who led off the inning with a base hit. Trinity came to bat trailing 9-7.

TCJ exploded for 6 runs in the first, a rally that included RBI in four consecutive plate appearances. Dominic Gattinella drew a bases-loaded walk, and Tyson LaChapelle was hit by pitch. Markeinis Brown followed with a sacrifice fly, and Huff doubled in two to make the score 5-0. With two outs, Richaun Amaro singled in Hoff, and Trinity led 6-0 at the inning's end. 

Toccoa responded with a run in the bottom of the first, but Gadriel Burgos answered with his third home run of the season to reextend the lead back to 6. 

Toccoa Falls, however, got three home runs in the second from Will Miller (solo shot), Peyton Powell (2-run homer), and Aiden Dumas (3-run homer) for a 6-run outburst that tied the score at 7-7. Hayden Scott's RBI single then gave his team the lead, and Toccoa added another in the fourth.

Darren Goeke, Jr. won it in relief after taking the mound with two outs in the second and stopping Toccoa's rally by getting a strikeout. Goeke proceeded to pitch 2 more innings, allowing 1 run on just 1 hit; he walked 1, struck out 4, and held the opposition down to allow his offense to rally late. Amaro then ended the game to earn the save with three scoreless frames, in which he allowed only 1 hit and fanned 3.

Game 1: Toccoa Falls 9, Trinity 5

Trinity scored 4 times in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead wirh RBI from McGann (double), Burgos (bases-loaded walk), Gattinella (single), and LaChapelle (walk). Toccoa then got a run in the bottom half. 

Trinity extended the lead to 5-2 in the 6th with a run on a double-play ball and appeared to be in control. Toccoa, though, scored 7 times in their final at bat, including a 3-run home run from Dumas and a 2-run double from Bryant Rushing to cap the rally. 

Remaining Schedule

The Eagles have two series remaining, and both are at home. On April 17 (single game) and 18 (double-header), the Eagles will host NAIA Florida National Univeristy. The regular season will then conclude with a three-game set against the South Region's Paine College on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. The South Region Tournament then follows from May 4-8 at the University of Fort Lauderdale
