Baseball: Eagles Split two, Advance to South Region Championship Game

Graham Gorman homered to start the scoring in a big third inning that put his team ahead for good as TBC Eagles Baseball came from behind to defeat the Chargers of Southeastern Baptist College 9-6 to stay alive in the NCCAA South Region Tournament. Earlier in the day, TBC lost to the top-seeded University of Fort Lauderdale 7-0 to force the must-win contest with SBC, who defeated Bob Jones University 11-10 in the day's first elimination game.

Game 2: Eagles 9, Southeastern Baptist 6

With the Eagles trailing 2-0 as they came to bat in the top of the fourth, Gorman smacked the inning's first pitch over the left field fence to put Trinity on the board. That blow (2) started a six-run frame that put the Eagles ahead to stay.

After Ryan Onkst singled one out later, Logan McGann drove him in from first with a triple off the center-field fence to tie the score. McGann then crossed with the go-ahead run on a Gavin Williams base hit, and the Eagles led 3-2. They were not finished.

Larson Lott greeted the new pitcher with a double that brought in Williams. Tyson LaChapelle and Dominic Gattinella both took pitches off the body to load the bases, and Lott then scored on a wild pitch. Nate Nogueras followed with a single that plated LaChapelle to make the score 6-2.

Southeastern Baptist got a fourth-inning RBI triple from Austen Shirley to get one back, but Nogueras responded a half inning later with his second run-scoring hit.

The Chargers took advantage of two miscues and a walk in the fifth to tally two and cut the score to 7-5.

Williams made it a four-run Trinity Baptist lead again in the sixth with a two-run double (McGann and Reeves), and the Chargers got their final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Starter Darren Goeke, Jr. won it with 4.2 innings of work, and only 1 of the 5 runs allowed was earned. Caiden Butler held the Chargers to a single run with 1.1 solid innings that began with his ending the fifth-inning rally with a popup from the only man he faced upon entering.

[Caiden Butler got four big outs in middle relief to preserve the lead.]

Drew Billings earned his 11th save of the season with a scoreless seventh that saw three easy ground balls to preserve the win.

Game 1: Fort Lauderdale 7, TBC 0

Andrew Mohler pitched very strong baseball for 4.1 innings against the South Region's top seed and the #3 team in the NCCAA. Mohler allowed just 2 earned runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2.

Fort Lauderdale, though, got to the bullpen, and Ronaldo Lujo hit a grand slamt to make the score 6-0. UFTL added 1 more in the fifth. Pitcher Gabriel Rangal held TBC to 3 singles (Onkst, Lott, Nogueras) in pitching a complete game shutout.

Championship Round

Trinity Baptist will face Fort Lauderdale in the championship round of the South Region Tournament at 12:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday. Trinity must win two games to claim the banner while Fort Lauderdale needs only one win.

The tournament champion will advance to the NCCAA World Series in Kansas City from May 17-21. The runner-up will still have a strong chance at an at-large invitation to the national tournament.
