Baseball: Three Eagles Homer in Another Slugfest with Atlantis

Offense was plentiful once again during TBC Eagles Baseball's Saturday double-header with USCAA Atlantis University. After the teams combined for 34 runs on Friday, they amassed 40 more in Saturday's afternoon twin bill for a total of 74 runs in three games. Atlantis won both games on Saturday by final scores of 7-3 and 17-13.

Three Eagles went deep in Game 2 to lead the Eagles offensively to another double-digit performance.

Game 2: Atlantis 17, Eagles 13

David Hickey, Colin Sepulveda, and Jacob Burke all homered in a two-inning span in which the Eagles came back from a five-run deficit to take a three-run lead.

In the bottom of the second, Hickey launched a two-run shot over the 400-foot sign in center with Gavin Williams aboard. The blast was Hickey's second of the season and tied the score at 5-5. Williams had just driven in Drew Gifford, whose grounder was bobbled and brought home Logan McGann (triple).

After Jordan Fernandez walked, Sepulveda pulled a high fly down the left-field line and over the fence for his first college home run to cap a six-run rally and give TBC a 7-5 lead.

One inning later, Burke smacked a vicious line drive just inside the left field foul pole for his first college home run. At that point, Trinity led 8-5.

Atlantis, though, came right back with a four-run rally in the top of the fourth that included a two-run bloop double from Orlando Boroto.

Sepulveda tied the score again at 9-all with sacrifice fly (Hickey, walk), and Trinity regained the lead when Fernandez (double) crossed the plate on a passed ball. Unfortunately, though, that was the last lead the Eagles would have. Atlantis scored 6 in the fifth then two more in the sixth on Jonathan Vasallo's two-run home run to make the score 17-12.

Trinity loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh and got a run-scoring single from Burke to bring the tying run to the plate. Atlantis closer Jorge Garcia then entered and got the next three men to earn the save.

Burke, Williams, Hickey, and McGann (triple, double) each recorded two hits while Parker Laffrey and Jack Musgrave also hit safely in addition to Fernandez and Sepulveda. Justin Suarez and Ray Sobrino each had 3 hits, and Sobrino drove in 3 to help lead Atlantis.

Game 1: Atlantis 7, Eagles 3

All three TBC runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Seth Reeves started the inning with a base hit and promptly stole second. Two outs later, Ryan Onkst doubled him in. Burke, running for Onkst, scored when Dominic Gattinella's grounder went through for an error. After Gattinella stole second, Williams knocked him in with a base hit to right center.

Atlantis got 2 home runs and 3 RBI from Vasallo, who finished the three-game series with 4 long balls and 11 runs driven in. Kevin Rodriguez went the distance, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. The Eagles struck the ball well all game, but the Atlantis defense made several tough plays.
