Women’s Soccer: Mendoza, Robinson Score First Goals; Eagles Tie Toccoa Falls 2-2

TCJ Women's Soccer took the lead twice, but each time, Toccoa Falls College came back to tie it in Saturday's South Region battle. Trinity took a 2-1 lead late in the second half, but Toccoa tied it with under a minute to play, and the game ended knotted up at 2-2.

Abigail Mendoza put Trinity on the board first in Minute 21. Kalli Robinson (assist) sent a pass via a header to Mendoza off a free kick a little past midfield. Mendoza dribbled around a defender and connected to the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 well into the second half.

Following a pushing foul, Toccoa's Jaela Hart converted a direct free kick by slashing a shot into the top left corner from approximately 20 yards out to make the score 1-1.

Just 20 game seconds later, though, Robinson gave Trinity back the lead after receiving a pass from Ayla Buckley (assist) on the left side. Robinson dribbled close to the goal and shot past the goalkeeper into the middle of the net, and Trinity led 2-1.

However, with less than a minute to play, Toccoa's leading scorer -- Jenny Jaffe -- stole a pass and broke free from the Trinity defense and took a wide-open shot with two defenders coming up from behind. Jaffe fired the game-tying shot into the right side.

Both teams had one last opportunity to break the tie, but neither could pentrate the defense again.

Both defenses were stingy all game long. Total combined shots were only 19: 10 for Toccoa Falls and 9 for Trinity.
