Women’s Soccer: Eagles Notch Win over NAIA Brewton-Parker

Kira Goodwin put the Eagles on the board in the first half, and two teammates added tallies in the second as TCJ Eagles Women's Soccer defeated that Barons of NAIA Brewton-Parker Christian University 3-0 on Saturday. The win is the second over a NAIA opponent in as many tries this season and the second win in six games with the Barons in series history.

Goodwin converted a penalty kick in Minute 29. Abigail Mendoza took a pop-up pass from Goodwin on the left side of the penalty box. Mendoza drew the foul inside the box when pushed from behind and down onto the ground. With her approach, Goodwin drew the goalkeeper to the right then fired into the left corner for the game's first goal and her own first collegiate goal.

The Eagles' defense held that 1-0 lead into halftime.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Camila Lopez took a pass from Shayla Mendonca (assist) launched a shot from the middle approximately 25 yards out, getting the ball over the head of the keeper and into the top of the net.

Lucy Rife finished the scoring in Minute 59 with a shot very similar to Lopez's but from even further out, approximately 35 yards, for her fifth goal of the season. Goodwin fed Rife the ball for the assist.

Defensively, the Eagles – led by Aubree Settle, Alyssa Lechuga, and Josselyn Medina – held the Barons to only one shot, and that was on a free direct kick. The trio thwarted every effort the Barons may have had. Trinity goalkeeper Katianna Grace did not record a save because she did not face a shot on goal for the entire game.

Trinity took 22 total shots, and 16 of them were on goal. Brewton-Parker goalkeeper Angel Camacho saved 13 with several of the on the dive. Rife had 4 shots on goal in 5 attempts, and Goodwin fired 5 times with 3 on goal to help lead the team.

The Eagles will travel to NJCAA Polk State College for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, September 13. The next home game is on September 16 against NAIA Warner University, and the team finishes September with a trip to New Port Richey to battle NJCAA Pasco-Hernando State College on the 19th.
