Women's Basketball: Eagles Win South Region Road Game at Southeastern Baptist
The nation's #8 TCJ Eagles Women's Basketball saw its two leading scorers each top 20 and two more hit double figures in the 89-59 South Region win at Southeastern Baptist College on Friday. Overall, nine Eagles scored points, and the team led for all but the first 32 seconds. The victory gurantees a winning record in South Region competition with one game left to play.
Emma Parrish and Travesha Giddens tied for the game high with 22 points and got their totals in different ways. Parrish sank 8 two-point baskets and 6 of 7 free throws while Giddens got all her points from the field on 11-for-17 shooting. Giddens also pulled in 11 rebounds to notch another double-double. M'lani Vitela approached 20 and finished with 17. She was 6 for 13 froim the field, including 2 for 4 from three-point range, and 3 for 4 at the line.
Overall the Eagles were 14 for 18 at the line and currently lead the nation in free throw attempts and rank #2 in free throws made.
Vitela scored the game's first basket 32 seconds after tipoff following the frist of 47 takeaways. Trinity never allowed the game to become even tied from that point on. They steadily added on througout the first quarter and led 23-10 by the period's end. Jaedin Houston's three-pointer started the second quarter, and after a 5-point SBC run, the Eagles finished the second quarter with an 11-7 run to lead 39-23 at halftime.
The third quarter is where the Eagles put the game away. Trinity outscored SBC 32-19 by sinking 13 baskets and 5 free throws. With 1:40 left, Kirsten Joseph's free throws gave Trinity its biggest lead of the night at 69-35.
Desiree Greene scored 5 for the Eagles, Jospeh finished with 4, Houston had 3, and Victoria Broadway and Laila Harvey each contributed 2.
Jamaya Morris (18), Sydney Coward (15), and Sanaa Holmes (12) lead SBC in scoring.
The regular season concludes at 2:00 p.m. EST at #3 Pensacola Christian College. The South Region Tournament then begins on Thursday, Fenruary 26, at Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia.
