Women's Basketball: Eagles Use Big Third Quarter to Defeat NAIA Abraham Baldwin
After trailing by 3 at halftime, TCJ Eagles Women's Basketball exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the fourth, and the Eagles held that lead for the entire final period as they defeated the Fillies of NAIA Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The margin got no closer than 4, and TCJ won 73-66.
In the big third quarter, seven Eagles scored with Caroline Smith getting 7 of her 15 total points on the night. Smith sank three short jumpers and a free throw in helping to turn the deficit into a double-digit lead. Victoria Broadway scored all 6 of her points in the big frame in a similar manner, including 2 for 2 at the line.
The Eagles first took the lead late in the first quarter on Emma Parrish's second three-pointer of the night, and the Eagles led 17-14 at the quarter's end.
ABAC, though, outscored TCJ 17-11 in the second, during which Shakiria Chaney began a surge that led to a 30-point night. ABAC led 31-28 at the break. Chaney then added 8 of her team's 14 in the third and 12 more in the fourth to complete her big night. Teammate Reese Riddle scored 14, and two more scored 8 each to help lead the Fillies.
During the second quarter, Alexandra Perez hit a shot-clock-beating three-pointer off the glass from nearly half court.
ABAC scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter to close to within 4 at 55-51, but the Eagles quickly answered with a Parrish three and layup as the start of her 9-point fourth quarter. Again, ABAC closed the gap, this time to 5 at 60-55 with 5:50 remaining, but Trinity finished with a 13-6 final push. Trinity sank 9 of 10 foul shots in the fourth to aid holding off the Fillies. Smith was 4 for 4 at the line during that stretch.
Travesha Giddens notched another double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing the game-high 14 rebounds. Perez totaled 8 points while M'lani Vitela and Desiree Greene each contributed 4, and Laila Harvey's 3 came in the big third quarter.
The Eagles will host Florida State College at Jacksonville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday then play their final home game vs. Trinity College of Florida at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day, February 14. The regular season concludes with two crucial South Region match-ups at Southeastern Baptist College and Pensacola Christian College on February 20 and 21, respectively.
