Women's Basketball: Eagles Battle #1 PCC to Final Minutes
Eight total players scored in double figures, and Travesha Giddens notched her 5th double-double of the season as TBC Eagles Women's Basketball took the #1 team in the nation down to the final minutes on Tuesday. The #9 TCJ Eagles got their season's second-highest point total, but Pensacola Christian College won the game 99-91.
Giddens had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minuets of work, scoring 8 of her points in the fourth quarter, during which Trinity erased a 10-point deficit. To cap that comeback, Kirsten Joseph tied the score at 81-81 with a layup just 5 seconds after hitting two fouls shots and stealing the ensuing inbound pass. Giddens started that run with a layup of her own; Emma Parrish connected on two from the line and then hit her own layup in between as Trinity scored 10 straight to knot it up.
Pensacola's Brooklyn Bosher, though, ended the run with a three-pointer to reclaim the lead for her team, and despite Trinity's relentless efforts thereafter, Bosher helped Pensacola stave off another comeback.
Joseph led TCJ with 21 points, a new season high. She was 7 for 12 from the field with a three-pointer and 6 for 7 at the line. M'lani Vitela scored 10 points in the first quarter and finished with 19, also sinking 6 of 7 foul shots. Parrish was 9 for 10 at the line for the bulk of her 14 points. Alexandra Perez was 5 for 6 from the field and added a free throw to total 11 points in 19 minutes. Caroline Smith scored 8, Victoria Broadway had 6, Laila Harvey contributed 2.
Overall, the game contained 10 tie scores and 8 lead changes, and both teams scored 21 or more in all four quarters. Each also had a quarter shooting over 70%: the first for Trinity at 73% and the fourth for PCC at 70%. The teams combined for 53 free throws made in 70 attempts (73%).
Bosher had an incredible night; she scored 44 points (5, 14, 13, 12) hit 6 three-pointers and 10 of 11 free throws. Sky Boyd scored 18 for PCC, and Micah Coalson tallied 11 (7 free throws). Five more PCC Eagles scored 26 more.
