Women's Basketball: Solid Start Leads Eagles to Win over Toccoa Falls

Emma Parrish and Travesha Giddens combined for 40 points, and a surge late in the first quarter led TCJ Women's Basketball to a big lead and a win over Toccoa Falls College in the first South Region contest of the season for both teams. Trinity fended off a strong third quarter from Toccoa Falls and played an even fourth with TFC to win the game 75-69.

Through three quarters, Parrish scored 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting, which included 4 successful three-pointers in 9 attempts. Parrish also sank 2 free throws to complete her scoring. It was her 10th double-digit performance in 15 total games this season, and she is ranked #19 in the nation in official-game scoring average. 

Giddens was 8 for 11 from the field to amass 16 points in the same time frame while pulling in 5 rebounds and assisting 2 other scores. Her rebounding total is currently #12 in NCCAA Division 2.

Trinity scored the first basket, and Toccoa tied it at 2-2 with 8:49 on the clock. Parrish broke that tie 33 seconds later, and Trinity never trailed or had it tied again.

The Eagles built a 10-point lead with 4:17 left in the first before Toccoa Falls closed the gap to 6 at 18-12 with 1:33 left in the period. From there, Parrish scored three consecutive times, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to make the score 25-12. The two combined for 19 of the 25 points while Kirsten Joseph, Desiree Greene, and Caroline Smith contributed 2 points each. 

The second quarter was much tighter, 21-19 in favor of TCJ. Toccoa's Jada Wood (9th in the NCCAA in scoting average) scored 11 of her 25 points by sinking 4 of 5 shots and 3 of 5 free throws. Wood would add 12 more points in a third quarter that saw her team storm back with 26 points to cut the deficit down to 6 at 63-57 at the period's end. Riley Berninger scored 10 points in the third on 3 field goals (1 a three) and three foul shots. 

Each team scored 12 in the fourth as the defenses held their opponents to a combined 28% shooting. Greene's three-pointer with 8:11 left started the scoring and gave TCJ a coushin to fend off Toccoa's comeback effort, led by Keara McDaniel and Rylan Dunden, who combined for 8 of their team's 12 points. Smith, Greene, and Laila Harvey combined for 10 of Trinity's 12, and Victoria Broadway and M'lani Vitela each hit a free throw that contributed mightliy to the win.

Overall, Vitela finished with 8 points. Smith totaled 7, Harvey and Greene each contributed 5, Joseph and Alexandra Perez each tallied 4, and Broadway added 2. 

For Toccoa Falls, Berninger followed Wood's 25 with 22 of her own; each sank 8 total field goals in the process to lead TFC. 

The Eagles will face the South Region's Bob Jones University at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12. The team then plays a pair of USCAA opponents in Trinity College of Florida on the road on January 19 and Beacon College at home on January 24.
