Women's Basketball: 26 Free Throws Lead to Big Win over Fort Lauderdale
Drawing fouls put the Eagles at the line for 31 attempts, and 26 of those went through as TCJ Eagles Women's Basketball defeated their namesake from NCCAA Division 1 University of Fort Lauderdale 71-35 in the final game before Thanksgiving Break. Caroline Smith hit 7 of those shots to lead Trinity in a game that TCJ led from buzzer to buzzer.
Trinity drew 27 fouls and got into the bonus early in each of the four quarters. As a team, they hit 84% of the ensuing free throws. Kirsten Joseph was 5 for 6, Travesha Giddens and Emma Parrish were each 4 for 4, Alexandra Perez was 3 for 5, Victoria Broadway was 2 for 2, and M'lani Vitela was 1 for 1.
From the field, Trinity shot 36% and held Fort Lauderdale to 20%. They reduced the turnovers to 12 and forced 30 from Fort Lauderdale, scoring 23 points because of them while the non-starters contrubited 30 points.
Parrish started the scoring with a 3-pointer just 29 seconds after tip-off. Smith's first free throw made it 4-0, and TCJ continued to build from there.

The closest UFTL got was 3 at 8-5, and Trinity finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 17-5. The second quarter saw Trinity outscore UFTL 22-6 with 9 of 10 at the line. Fort Lauderdale won the third quarter 17-16, but Trinity finished with a 16-7 fourth, sinking 8 of 11 from the line in the process.
Giddens led all scorers with 20 total points, and Parrish scored 16. Broadway contributed 10 while Smith compiled 9, Joseph and Perez each tallied 5, and Vitela and Laila Harvey each added 3.
Fort Lauderdale's Amelia Gatson led with 13 points with 8 in the third quarter. Seven teammates contributed points in the effort.
After Thanksgiving Break, the Eagles will host NAIA New College of Florida at 6:00 p.m. on December 2 and NJCAA USC Salkahatchie at 2:00 p.m. on December 6. Three road games between December 12 and 19 will finish the first semester of play.
