Women’s Basketball: Eagles Get Senior Day Win over Trinity College of Florida

All players scored points, and four hit double digits as TBC Eagles Women's Basketball defeated the Tigers from Trinity College of Florida 78-67 on Senior Day Saturday. The win is the fourth in a row for the Eagles, and it came in the final home game of the season.

A big first quarter ended up the difference. After the Tigers scored the first 6 points, Victoria Broadway sank a three-pointer to put the Eagles on the board, and Ranajala Brown hit a free throw and a three of her own to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

TBC soon led 11-6 before the Tigers regained the lead at 14-13 on a Desiree Greene three-pointer at the 2:57 mark; that was TCFL's last lead.

Broadway, Kirsten Joseph, and Caroline Smith combined for the period's final 11 points, and the Eagles never relinquished the lead.

Quarters 2, 3, and 4 were all close – either tied or within two points. At times, the Tigers got to within three points despite falling behind by 18 midway through the third. Bre'Anna Ortega scored 14 of her game-high 24 in the second half using a very solid performance at the line: 10 for 14 in the second half and 14 for 18 overall.

Brown finished with 21 points for the Eagles, and Smith and Laila Harvey each scored 14. Joseph totaled 11 while Broadway tallied 9, Alexis Hall scored 6, and Alessandra Henriquez hit a 3-pointer.

The Eagles shot 44% overall from the field and sank 7 three-pointers and 23 free throws.

Treniti Fluker (16) and Greene (13) also scored double figures for the Tigers, who sank 5 threes and 26 free throws overall.

Senior Day for Ariel Phillips

Senior Ariel Phillips did not play this season due to injury, but she remains an important part of the team. During her Senior Day ceremony, Coach Jones described Phillips as not allowing her injury to define her senior year. "Despite this [injury]," said Coach Jones, "Ariel's impact on the team has been felt in other ways off the court, especially through team bonding experiences. She treasured those special moments, like the team get-together at Caroline's house."

Ariel will graduate with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, specializing in Sports & Fitness Administration; she plans to work as a Legal Assistant while coaching, with the goal of becoming a public relations agent for professional athletes. Her life verse is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

The Eagles have four games remaining in the regular season, all on the road and three in the South Region. First, TBC will visit Bob Jones University on February 13, followed by Paine College on February 15, Southeastern Baptist College on February 21, and Pensacola Christian College on February 22.
