Women's Basketball: Smith, Brown Combine for 53 vs. #1 Champion Christian
Caroline Smith and Ranajala Brown combined for 53 points in a tremendous effort against the nation's #1 NCCAA Division 2 team when TBC Eagles Women's Basketball battled the Tigers of Champion Christian College. The five available Eagles gave the top-seeded Tigers a great game, but Champion won it 92-72.
Smith exploded for a career high 33 points on the strength of 10 field goals and 13 free throws. After scoring 10 points total in the first half, Smith was 4 for 5 from the field and 3 for 4 at the line in the third quarter and 3 for 6 and 7 for 8, respectively, in the fourth.
Brown was 5 for 9 from the field, including three three-pointers, and perfect in 7 foul shot attempts to amass 20 points, which was tied for second on the night behind only Smith.
Aside from a great run by Champion in the final three minutes of the first quarter, the two teams were very close most of the way. Champion's 17-6 run during that stretch was the biggest difference as each team shot 42-43% and hit most of their free throws (13 of 15 for Champion and 20 of 26 for Trinity).
Trinity outscored the top-seeded Tigers 44-41 in the second half, shooting over 50% in the two periods combined.
Laila Harvey and Reniyah Clark each scored 7 points for the Eagles, and Jaedin Houston totaled 5.
The Tigers got 20 points from Natalia Silva, 15 from Isabel Bueno, and 11 from Brendaja Holomon to lead the team. All seven of their teammates also scored points.
The Eagles will play a home game with NCAA Division 2 Albany State University at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12. The final two gams of the semester are both on the road at NJCAA opponents USC Salkehatchie State College on December 19 and Southern Crescent Technical College on December 21.
