Softball: Young, Shaw Finish TCJ Careers with Strong Performances in South Region Tournament; Young, Yi Earn All-Region Honors

TCJ Eagles Softball closed the season with two very exciting games in the South Region Tournament. The team played terrific softball against tough opponents, and a few Eagles in particular soared high. Seniors Piper Young and Ashlee Shaw had especially strong performances in their final games as TCJ Eagles. Depsite the excitement, however, Trinity fell to Baptist Unversity of Florida 2-1 in the first game on Monday and 3-0 to the University of Fort Lauderdale in the second game on Tuesday

Senior pitcher Piper Young was terrific in the circle. In two games, Young totaled 12 innings, allowing 5 runs (only 3 earned) on 11 hits. She walked only 1 batter and struck out 4.

As a hitter, Young was 2 for 7 with a double.

Senior catcher Ashlee Shaw was effective at the plate. In two games, Shaw was 3 for 6 with a run scored.

Shaw also threw out a base runner trying to steal second.

Monday's game with Baptist was scoreless until the Eagles came to bat in the top of the 6th. Nicole Yi drew a walk to open the inning and advanced to second on a ground ball. Shaw singled, and Yi raced around to try to score, but a terrific throw from center fielder Olivia Spooner caught Yi at the plate.

Cali Dunn followed with another base hit to center, but Shaw got in just ahead of another Spooner throw. The Eagles soon loaded the bases with two outs, but Spooner ran down Carlin Payne's fly ball to end the inning.

Baptist rallied for 2 in the bottom of the 6th with a run-scoring ground ball from Jamie Jackson and a RBI double from Janni Murray.

Young allowed only 2 runs on 6 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts. Young, Shaw, Yi, Peyton Flynt, Chesnee Isom, and Dunn (2) all collected hits for the Eagles.

Versus Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, Young allowed only 1 earned run on 5 hits with a walk and a strikeout. The Eagles collected 5 total hits from Payne, Shaw (2), Young, and Yi.

Trailing 2-0 when they came to bat in the top of the 6th, the Eagles threatened to take the lead. They put two on with one out, but Fort Lauderdale's defense made two spectacular plays to end the inning. Yi smacked a hard grounder to third, but Tavyn Gage snared it and got the out at first. Kylea Duhig laced a line drive to the right-center field gap, but center fielder Cheyenne Southers ran it down and made the catch on the sprint.

All-South Region

Young and Yi both made the All-South Region 2nd Team roster.

Young's final totals included 4 wins, a 4.90 ERA, 22 walks, and 72 strikeouts as a pitcher and a .305 batting average, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run, 15 runs scored, and 16 RBI as a hitter.

Yi had a slash line of .313/.370/.563. She led the Eagles with 4 home runs and drove in 15 runs. She hit 8 doubles and scored 18 runs.

Congratulations to the Eagles for their strong play in the tournament and throughout the 2026 softball season.
