Softball: Dunn's Bat, Young's Arm Lead Eagles to South Region Win over Baptist Florida

A pair of hits from Cali Dunn, RBI from three separate batters, and a stellar pitching performance from Piper Young led TCJ Eagles Softball to a South Region win over their namesake from Graceville's Baptist University of Florida. Trinity scored in the first inning and built a 3-0 lead a little later. Young then stopped a comeback effort with three consecutive strikeouts, and Trinity held on for the 3-2 win.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Young reached on an error and stole second base. Dunn followed with a base hit to right to drive in Young.

An inning later, TCJ loaded the bases without a base hit thanks to a pair of walks and an error in between. With two outs, Ashlee Shaw drew a walk that brought home Madison Whitmeyer to make the score 2-0. Young  then singled to center to score Alondra Galindo-Diaz

The score remained 3-0 until Baptist batted in the top of the 6th. An error allowed Jasey Nelson to reach to start the frame. Lacey Goddin tripled to right, allowing Nelson to race around from first. An overthrow back to the infield went astray, and Goddin scampered home to make the score 3-2.

Young, though, induced a ground out then fanned the next batter to end the inning. She then worked around a leadoff double in the 7th that put the tying run in scoring position with three consecutive strikeouts. The final batter launched one over the left-field fence but foul. Young got a swinging Strike 3 with a sweeper on her next pitch to end the game.

Young's line reads GC, W, 7 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, and 8 K. She was also 1 for 3 at the plate with a run scored and a run driven in. Dunn was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI to lead Trinity's offense. Carlin Payne was 1 for 2 and drew a walk.

Baptist's Jamie Jackson pitched effectively as well: CG, 6 IP, 3 UER, 4 H, 3 BB, and 1 K.

The two teans will play twice on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Trinity will then have until April 13 before playing again in their final home games of the season against Jacksonville's NCAA Division 2 Edward Waters Unveristy
