Softball: Eagles Battle #1 Fort Lauderdale Tough but Come Up Short

In the opening round of the South Region Tournament, TBC Eagles Softball battled the NCCAA's #1 team and the tournament's top-seeded University of Fort Lauderdale. TBC played tough and get solid pitching and defense, but UFTL scored single runs in four straight innings to win it 4-1.

Ellarie McGatha drove in Hannah Wilen in the top of the seventh for the lone run. Wilen led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third when Emma Wilen's hard ground ball resulted in an error. McGatha then sacrificed in the run to put the Eagles on the board.

Jessica Johnson, Ashlee Shaw, Piper Young, and Hannah Wilen all hit safely against UFTL's Alexa Geary, the nation's ERA leader at just 1.34.

Young was solid in the circle for Trinity Baptist, allowing 4 earned runs on 9 hits while walking 0 and striking out 4. Her defense was flawless behind her.

On Friday, Trinity Baptist will play Paine College at 1:00 p.m. EDT in an elimination game. A win would put the Eagles into the 7:00 p.m. game against the loser of the 3:00 match-up between Fort Lauderdale vs. Carolina University.

The championship game is on Saturday.
