Softball: Young Pitches 1-Hit Shutout, Drives in 3 in Split with Webber International
Piper Young took a no-hitter into the seventh and drove in the game's only run in the Game 1 victory and totaled 3 RBI at the plate in Wednesday afternoon's double-header with the Warriors of NAIA Webber International University. The Warriors also got stellar pitching in the opener then took Game 2 in the split of the twin bill.
Game 1: Eagles 1, Webber international 0
Young pitched six no-hit, no-run innings, during which she allowed only two base runners with both in different innings. In fact, the first was erased when Ashlee Shaw caught her trying to steal second base in the top of the fourth. The second came an inning later, but Young easily got the next two hitters two retire the side.
At the plate, Young provided all the offense she and the Eagles would need. Carlin Payne led off the frame with a base hit to left and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jessica Johnson walked, and Shaw beat out a bunt to load the bases.
Young followed with a ground ball fielder's choice that brought in Payne for the lone run, and Young made that run stand up in the circle thanks in large part to the defense that played flawlessly behind her.
Young struck out three Webber hitters, and the only hit she allowed was a leadoff single to Haley Saylor in the seventh. Young then induced two popups to Taylor Foster at second and a fly ball to left that Payne put away to end the game and secure the win.
Payne and Kylea Duhig also hit safely for the Eagles, who met up with three solid Webber hurlers that combined for only 1 run on 3 hits, 5 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Webber's defense also played errorless ball.
Game 2: Webber International 14, Eagles 3
Piper Young tripled in the bottom of the first and scampered home on a passed ball to put the Eagles on the board at 3-1. Two innings later, Young drove in a pair with a double to left. Taylor Foster (single) and Ashlee Shaw (reached on error) raced home on the drive, but that was all Webber would allow.
Webber used an 8-run second to add to their a lead and scored 3 unearned runs later to put up the final score.
