Softball: Young Has Solid Outing, Duhig Homers in DH with Florida Gateway
Piper Young pitched another very solid game in the opener, and Kylea Duhig went deep in Game 2 of TBC Eagles Softball's Saturday afternoon double-header with Florida Gateway College. Young held FGC in check, and the Eagles mounted a first-inning rally in Game 2, but Florida Gateway won both games 3-0 and 16-6.
In Game 1, Young pitched all seven innings, allowing just 3 earned runs on 7 hits; she struck out 4 without walking a single batter. The defense behind her was flawless to help keep the Eagles in the game. Gateway scored only single runs in each of the first, second, and sixth innings. However, FGC pitchers Charli Wollard and Kinsey Bardoff combined for only 4 hits allowed with three of them singles.
Young tripled and singled in three trips to the plate while Ashlee Shaw and Hannah Wilen also hit safely.
In the nightcap, FGC had an 8-run top of the first (all unearned), but the Eagles quickly began a comeback effort with a 5-run bottom half.
TBC put the first three batters aboard on Jessica Johnson's single and miscues off the bats of Wilen and Shaw. Young followed with a two-run double to right to drive in Johnson and Wilen.
Duhig followed with a long drive over the center-field fence for her collegiate first home run.

The three-run blast also scored Shaw and Young, and the Eagles cut the deficit down to three.
Johnson was 2 for 3 to lead the Eagles at the plate.
Shaw drove in Carlin Payne (reached on error) with a ground ball to give Trinity another run in the fourth. However, Florida Gateway continued to add runs in the fifth and sixth on route to the final score.
The Eagles will host NAIA Webber International University for a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. The final home games are against NCAA Division 2 Edward Waters University on April 14 before the regular season concludes with three matchups on the road between April 16 and 22.
