Men’s Soccer: Seven Eagles Score in Team’s Third Straight Win

South Region play began on Labor Day for TCJ Men's Soccer, and the Eagles' first opponent was Carolina Christian College. Seven Eagles scored goals with five them assisted by five teammates as TCJ won its South Region opener. The win is also their third straight overall.

Joshua Amesbury started the scoring less than two minutes after the opening kickoff. He took a pass from the top left corner of the box from Aaron Uribe and knocked the ball in from approximately six yards out to put the Eagles ahead to stay.

Fourteen minutes later, a trio of goals started and ran from Minutes 16 and 23: Gabriel Bonini (assist from Salim Mohammadi) in Minute 16, Uribe (Leandro Concepcion) in Minute 21, and Concepcion (Richard Bernardo de Lima) in Minute 23. No further scoring happened for the remainder of the half, and TCJ led 4-0 at the intermission.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Ashton Karney smashed in a rebound off a shot from Christy Kerry Jean Francois that goalkeeper Ethan Holgren saved on a dive. Karney was right there for the easy tip in.

In Minute 51, River Turlington (assist) found Luke Brunt sprinting unguarded up the middle. Turlington fed Brunt, and from the top of the penalty box, Brunt slapped the ball low and into the right corner for his first collegiate goal.

The final tally came from Joao Pedro Cury Mendonca on a free kick from approximately 25 yards out with 7 minutes left to play. His shot curved, deflected off Holgren, and bounced in.

Holgren saved 8 of 15 shots on goal faced, and Trinity took 18 shots overall. TCJ goalkeeper Christian David saved all 5 shots on goal he faced, and Colby Callahan saved the 2 he faced in his 18:47 of work. The defense held Carolina to 11 shots overall and only 2 in the first half.

The Eagles will host NAIA Webber International University at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 8. A stretch of seven games on the road follows with an initial trip to the South Region's Toccoa Falls College on Friday, September 12.
