Men's Basketball: Eagles Never Trail in South Region win over Baptist University of Florida
Diego Fernandez broke a 9-9 early on, and TCJ Eagles Men's Basketball led for all but 54 total seconds on route to a South Region win over the Eagles of Baptist University of Florida. Trinity never trailed in the game, having scored first on Brandon Hill's jump shot 40 seconds in. The win guarantees a winning record in the regular season and at least an even record in South Region play with two games remaining.
Trinity scored the first six points thanks to Hill, DJ Thompson, and Alex Dawson, and Fernandez's only three-pointer of the night made the score 9-3. Baptist made three consecutive field goals to force the only tie score of the night. From there, TCJ steadily built a lead to as much as 12, and although Baptist pulled to within 2 at 29-27 and again at 31-29 with 6:14 left in the first half, Trinity held that lead and rebuilt it back up to 10 at 48-38 at halftime.
The largets lead of the game was 16 points at 59-43 with 17:21 left to play, and as Baptist put up solid efforts and a 2-point margin in the second half, Trinity never saw the lead shrink smaller than 5 points.
Fernandez led the Eagles with 22 points, including a 5-for-7 performance at the line to increase his #1 ranking in free throws made and attempted. Derek Rivers, the nation's leading three-point percentage shooter, sank 5 of 7 from beyaind the arc to total 15 points, and Tayden Owens scored 14.
Five more TCJ Eagles contributes points. Thompson and Dawson had 7 each, Hill finished with 6, Josh Bledsoe hit a 3-pointer, and Sherrard Adams added 2. The team totaled 10 3's and hit 8 of 10 at the line.
Baptist's Omairi Henry had the game high 28 points, including 4 for 7 from three-point range, and teammates Solomon Sutton (17) and Jordan Isaac (11) also scored in double digits. Both teams shot over 40% with TCJ at 46% on the night.
The regular season concludes with South Region action at Southeastern Baptist College at 8:00 p.m. EST on Friday and Pensacola Christian College at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The South Region Tournament begins on Febuary 26 at Tocca Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia.
