Men's Basketball: Eagles Set Record in Win at TCFL
TCJ Eagles Men's Basketball set a new program record for points in a non-overtime game when they won at Trinity College of Florida on Monday. Two Eagles topped 20 points, and three more were in double figures. A 62-point second half led to the record as TCJ won the game 116-66.
The team record for points in any game is 119, set in a four-overtime thiller at Florida Gateway College in January of 2023.
Tayden Owens led the way with 26 points by sinking 8 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 7 from three-point range, and all 5 of his foul shots. Owens also assisted 3 other scores and pulled in 7 rebounds in helping to lead his team toward the new record.
Diego Fernandez totaled 23 on an 8-for-17 performance that included 4 threes while adding 3 free throws. Fernandez also assisted 7 other scores and pulled in 7 defensive rebounds.
Maximus Fuentes (14), DJ Thompson (10), and Brandon Hill (10) combined for 34 points on 57% shooting from the field, 1 three-pointer, and 9 of 10 at the line. Hill tallied a double-double by also grabbing 10 rebounds.
TCFL started the scoring and led at three different points very early: 2-0, 4-2, and 7-4. Fernandez's first three-pointer tied the score, and after Owens put the Eagles ahead 9-7, the team did not trail again. The Eagles started to pull away in the latter portions of the first half and went into the break leading 54-30. The Eagles then outscored TCFL 62-36 in the second half.
Sherrard Adams scored 9 while Josh Bledsoe nailed a pair of threes for 6, Jayden Little scored 6 inside the paint, Derek Rivers hit a deuce and a three for 5, Shadrack Kakora hit a pair of jumpers for 4, and Jesse Mitchell buried a three.
As a team, the Eagles shot 49% from the field and made a season-high 42 baskets, hit a season-high 15 three-pointers (41%) and sank 17 of 20 (85%) free throws.
The Eagles will battle the South Region's Bob Jones University at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29. The next two are also home games against South Region competition in Pensacola Christian College on January 31 and Southeastern Baptist College on February 3. Five of the six contests that remain afterward are on the road.
