Men's Basketball: Eagles Storm Back but Come Up Just Short at Morris College
A three-pointer brought the Eagles to within 4 with under four minutes to play as TBC Eagles Men's Basketball nearly erased a 16-point halftime deficit against the Hornets of NAIA Morris College on Tuesday. Morris, though, responded immediately and fended off the comeback effort to win 75-69.
Diego Fernandez hit that three-pointer that made the score 65-61 with 3:55 remaining to cap a 7-point run. Morris's Allen Hughes sank the response before Fernandez again got the Eagles to within 4 at 67-63 with 2:40 left on the clock. Morris, though, got a jump shot and a pair of free throws to keep Trinity from getting any closer.
The surge began with the Eagles returning from the locker room trailing 45-29. Fernandez, Tayden Owens, DJ Thompson and Derek Rivers help cut that lead down to 10, and Maximus Fuentes made it a single-digit margin at 56-47 with a free throw at the 11:30 mark. The run continued in Trinity's favor until 65-58 before Fernandez's three-pointer.
The Eagles again shot well from the field (40% overall) and the line (76%). In their strong second half, they shot 44%, hit 3 three-pointers, and converted 9 of 10 foul shots. At the close of play on Tuesday, the Eagles are #4 in the nation in shooting percentage (46.4%), #8 in the nation in free throws attempted (258), and #9 in free throws made (185).
Fernandez finished with 21 points, the seventh time he has topped 20. He was 6 for 14 from the field and 8 for 8 at the line. Owens set a new season high with 17 points on 4 baskets (2 threes) and 7 for 8 at the line. Rivers also set a new season high with 11 on 4 field goals (2 threes) and a foul shot.
Fuentes and Thompson each scored 5 for the Eagles while Brandon Hill contributed 4 and Adrian Walker added 2.
Morris got double figures from four men, led by Khalil Baker with 22. Allen Hughes and Julian Miller each scored 15, and Xavier Holley had 10. The Hornets shot 52% overall and 58% in the first half.
The Eagles will visit NCCAA Division 1 Clinton College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday then play their final game of 2025, an NCAA Division 1 exhibition at Florida International University, at 12:00 p.m. on December 22 in Miami. Play will resume in January with 2 of the first 3 games at home against South Region rivals Toccoa Falls College and Bob Jones University.
