Men’s Basketball: Eagles Defeat Bob Jones in Back-and-Forth Thriller

Nine ties and 13 lead changes were the story as TBC Eagles Men's Basketball held on for a 1-point win (74-73) over the Bruins of Bob Jones University. The Eagles fell behind by 12 in the first half but stormed back to take the lead at the break, and a seesaw affair ensued in the second. A BJU buzzer-beating attempt went wide as the clock hit 0:00 at the end.

Ian Kanady stole a pass at midcourt with 52 seconds left and the Eagles trailing 73-72. Kanady drove to the basket, but a defender got in his way. Ethan Bray was wide open to Kanady's right; he took a bounce pass from Kanady and laid the ball in underhanded to give the Eagles the 1-point lead on the game's final scoring play.

Two timeouts later, the Eagles got the ball back on a travelling call, ran the clock down, and took a shot. A rebound gave the Eagles what appeared to be the game's final possession before a miscue awarded Bob Jones one final chance with 2.3 seconds left. An inbound pass and a missed shot at the buzzer ended the game.

Bray's game winner was part of his 8 points in a contest in which every point mattered.

Xavier Rose led all players with 23 points, 17 in the first half. He also assisted 5 other scores. Jacquez Anderson scored a season high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and a 4-for-5 performance at the line. DJ Thompson scored 10 to help lead the Eagles.

TBC shot 58% on the night, including an incredible 68% in the first half. Bob Jones shot an even 50% in each half. Trinity took only 7 foul shots and made 6 while BJU was 18 for 27 at the line.

BJU scored the game's first 8 points and eventually built several 8-point leads through the early portions of the first half. Braxton Murray scored twice in less than a minute to give the Bruins a 24-12 lead with 8:49 left in the half. Thompson, Rose, and Anderson then combined to put the Eagles on a 16-3 run to take their first lead of the night. That was the only lead change in the first half, and moments later, Trinity led 37-36 at the break.

It was game on from there.

The second half featured 9 ties and 12 lead changes with the biggest lead for either team at 5 (BJU 58-53). Kanady's three-pointer with 2:21 remaining made it 72-71 Trinity; 18 seconds later, Trevor Pittman scored the last of his 20 points to put Bob Jones back in front 73-72 before Bray's game-winning layup.

Kanady finished with 9 points while Diego Fernandez, Brandon Hill, and Jace Spinelli each contributed 2 vital points.

Devin Pope was second on the Bruins with 19; teammates Trevor Brunson (12) and Shad Vander Hart (10) also had double digits in scoring.

The Eagles will visit Paine College on Saturday then play their final home game of the season at 4:00 p.m. on February 17 against Florida Gateway College. The season the ends with two away at Southeastern Baptist College and Pensacola Christian College on February 21 and 22, respectively.
