Men's Basketball: Eagles Battle for Overtime Win at Welch
DJ Thompson scored the first points of overtime, and clutch free throws by Ian Kanady and Diego Fernandez in the final moments sealed the win in Trinity's first of three contests at the Midwest/South Region Crossover played at Welch College in Gallatin, Tennessee. Trinity played the host school, and both teams erased several deficits throughout the game. A three-pointer at the end of regulation forced the extra period.
Thompson's jump shot 25 seconds into overtime put Trinity ahead 76-74, and the Eagles eventually built a seven-point lead at 82-75 with 1:21 left to play. However, Welch got a three-pointer from Draven Smith and two deuces in succession to retie the score with 29 seconds remaining.
Kanady drew a foul with 6 seconds left and sank both shots. Fernandez drew another foul after rebounding a missed Welch jumper and converted a free throw to force Welch to shoot a three at the buzzer. That effort was blocked, and the Eagles earned the win.
After falling behind early in the first half, the Eagles stormed back to claim the lead seven minutes into the game and held that lead for most of the remaining time. Welch, though, went on a 15-7 run in the final 6:38 to take a halftime lead at 42-38.
Fernadez exploded for 15 points in the second half, hitting three three-pointers in his surge, to help TBC build a 71-61 lead before Welch fought back. Trailing by four with 19 seconds left, Welch got a free throw from Tony Gaines and a game-tying three-pointer from Isak Eriksson to send the game into overtime.
Fernadez finished the night with 25 points to tie for the game high. Xavier Rose totaled 19, Thompson tallied 14, and Kanady scored 11 to help lead the Eagles. TBC also got crucial point contributions from Ethan Bray (6), Jacquez Anderson, (5), Brycen Rowland (3), and Brandon Hill (2). Every point proved significant.
