Men’s Basketball: Five Eagles Score Double Digits at New College of Florida
Xavier Rose led all scorers, and four teammates hit double digits as TBC Eagles Men's Basketball played an exciting game with the Banyans of NAIA New College of Florida. The Eagles made a strong comeback effort in the second half and outshot the Banyans percentagewise, but New College held on for the 77-67 win.
Rose, who surpassed 900 career points in his previous game, scored a game-high and personal season best 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 shooting at the line. He totaled 12 points in the first half and 8 in the second. Rose now sits at 923.
Diego Fernandez and Ethan Bray each scored 12 points. Bray was 2 for 3 from beyond the arc, including draining one in the game's final seconds. Brandon Hill finished with 11 points, and DJ Thompson had 10.
TBC took an early lead at 9-4, but New College came back to tie the score and eventually pull ahead. After trailing by 11 late in the first half, the Eagles scored 8 consecutive points on three layups from Rose and another from Fernandez. However, the Banyans responded with a 9-2 run to close out the half leading 38-28.
Both teams scored 39 points in a second half that saw Trinity outshoot New College by four percentage points. Bray's first three-pointer brought TBC to within 4 at 62-58 with 4:12 left to play, but the Banyans responded again with baskets from several players to keep the game from getting any closer. New College also converted 16 of 23 foul shots in the second half (and 26 of 34 overall) to help put up the final margin.
Charlie Yoder (19 points, 9 for 11 at the line) and Caleb Kozinski (12 points, 9 for 10 at the line) were instrumental in New College's strong finish.
Overall, the Eagles shot 43.5% from the field to New College's 41.4%.
The Eagles will visit Tallahassee's Florida A&M University on November 22 for their final NCAA Division 1 exhibition of the season before traveling to NAIA Ave Maria University on November 25. December has four games on the docket from December 3 and 17: two away that bookend two at home in between.
