Men’s Basketball: Eagles Set Season-High Point Total in Win over Grace Christian

Hitting 23 deuces, 11 three-pointers, and 11 foul shots will earn a team a 90-point performance, and that is exactly what TBC Eagles Men's Basketball did on Tuesday in their contest with the Mideast Region Tigers of Grace Christian University. The Eagles shot an incredible 59.6% from the field, including 63.3% in the second half to turn a 41-41 tie at halftime into a 90-79 win.

Those 90 points are a new season high for the Eagles.

With the Eagles leading by three at 74-71 with 4:36 left, Zach Kiadii started a 9-1 run to put TBC up 83-72 with only two minutes left to play. Jacquez Anderson (three-pointer), Diego Fernandez, and Xavier Rose finished the scoring at 90, surpassing the previous season-high of 89 the Eagles scored in the season opener against Beacon College.

Fittingly, Fernandez got the final tally for Trinity, completing his 22-point night that led all players. Fernandez scored 6 in the first half and exploded for 16 more in the second. He was 9 for 14 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and he hit both his free throws. Anderson was 4 for 6 from three-point range and added a foul shot to finish second on the team with 13 points. He was also tied for the lead in rebounds with 7.

The first half was back-and-forth after TBC scored the first five points. The teams traded leads three times until the 9:28 mark when Grace's Bankeys Omari hit a three that put his team ahead 23-22. Grace extended and held the lead but never by more than six points. Each time Trinity got close, a Grace shooter would connect to maintain the lead.

With 2:21 left in the half, Rose laid one in to make the score 39-38. A minute later, Jace Spinelli converted two foul shots that finally tied the score then put Trinity ahead 40-39. Bankeys then responded with two free throws of his own before Spinelli hit another to knot the score at 41 heading into halftime.

Rose put Trinity ahead just 14 seconds into the second half, and the Eagles did not trail again. They gradually built the lead up to 12, but Grace came back to within three with 4:36 left to play.

Gavin Korth-Loder also scored 13 for the Eagles, and Rose totaled 12; Spinelli finished with 11. Brandon Hill scored 8, Kiadii contributed 6, and DJ Thompson had 5. The team was 11 for 18 from three-point range, including 6 for 9 in the 49-point second half.

Omari and Ty Theil led Grace Christian with 19 points each, and JoCorian Freeman scored 12 to help lead the Tigers, who also shot well at 41% while sinking 10 three-pointers and 15 free throws.

The Eagles will play three South Region opponents in the coming days. First, Toccoa Falls College comes to Trinity Gymnasium on Saturday, January 13. Pensacola Christian College then visits on January 16 before TBC heads to Kissimmee to battle Johnson University of Florida on January 18. All three dates feature women's/men's double-headers within the South Region.
