Men’s Basketball: Eagles Take Season Opener by 14 over Beacon

Fourteen different men scored points, and three hit double digits in TBC Eagles Men's Basketball's season opener vs. USCAA Beacon College Blazers on Saturday. The game was inside Trinity Gymnasium and the official regular-season debut of Nate Deleon as the new head coach. Trinity Baptist won 89-75.

Oramis Figuereo led the Eagles with 14 points, and Jacquez Anderson followed with 13. Figuereo was 6 for 10 with a three-pointer from the field and hit his only foul shot to amass his 14 points. Anderson used a trio of threes as part of his baker's dozen, and he also shared the team lead in rebounds with 6.

Xavier Rose scored 12 points on a 5-for-8 performance and added a pair of free throws, and he assisted on 7 teammates' baskets, which led everyone on the court.

Beacon jumped out to an early 7-2 lead less than two minutes into the game thanks in large part to Logan Schayes, who totaled 40 points on the day. That lead did not last long, however, as the Eagles got a three-pointer from Jace Spinelli and a free throw from Diego Fernandez to pull to within 1. Rose soon after sank two more to give the Eagles a 10-9 lead.

The teams traded baskets until Beacon led 15-13. Spinelli stole a pass and went the distance for the layup to tie the score at 15-15 with 14:04 left in the first half, and the Eagles never trailed again.

The Blazers kept the game close, however, and the teams went into halftime with Trinity leading 47-40.

TBC pulled away early in the second half and built multiple 20-point leads, but Schayes stayed hot throughout the game to cut into those deficits each time. Schayes sank 12 field goals for the Blazers, including 4 threes and 10 of 12 free throws to garner his 38 points.

Trinity, though, never let the deficit get back into single digits, shooting 45% from the field, hitting 8 three pointers, and draining 15 of 20 from the line.

Three Eagles scored 7 points each: Spinelli, Ian Kanady, and Zach Kiadii. DJ Thompson added 6 points while Fernandez, Aubrey Howard, and Gavin Korth-Loder each contributed 5; Ahmir Hardy, Will Mosbach, Robbie Simmons, and Brandon Hill each added 2. Korth-Loder tied Anderson with 6 rebounds.

Tony Wade scored 14 for the Blazers, and Jordique Vincent finished with 8 to help lead Beacon.

The Eagles will participate in the Pensacola Christian College Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4. On Friday, TBC plays Crowley's Ridge College at 7:00 p.m. EDT, and on Saturday it's TBC vs. Ecclesia College at 2:00 p.m. An exhibition at NCAA D-1 Stetson University follows on November 6, and the next home game is at 7:00 p.m. on November 13 vs. NCCAA Clinton College.
