Baseball: 4th Inning Outburst Leads to Win over Florida National
A 7-run botoom of the 4th and very solid pitching led TCJ Eagles Baseball to an 8-3 win over the visiting Conquistadors of NAIA Florida National University on Friday. The Eagles pounded out 12 hits, including 6 in the 4th on the road to victory.
Coming to bat leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th, the Eagles got a leadoff single from Dominic Gattinella, who promptly stole second base. He came in on Richaun Amaro's one-out base hit to center to make it 2-0. Trace Hoff and Logan McGann followed with singles. McGann's scored Tyson LaChapelle (walk), and an overthrow on the play allowed Amaro to race home to give Trinity a 4-0 lead.
Larson Lott took a pitch off the back, and Gavin Williams followed with a 2-run double off the left-field wall. Gadriel Burgos repeated the task with a two-run double of his own to cap the 7-run rally, and Trinity led 8-0.
The first run came in the third when Hoff (walk) crossed on a ground-ball double play with the bases loaded.
Jacob Brigman won it with 6 strong innings of work. He allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5. Chance Helvey finised with three solid innings of his own to earn his first collegiate save. Helvey allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman while striking out 2.
Florida National got single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 9th innings on two singles and a sacrifice fly in between.
Williams was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, and Amaro and Hoff each had 2 hits. Burgos, Gattinella, LaChapelle, McGann, and Jacob Burke also hit safely for the Eagles.
The two teams will play a Saturday double-header beginning at 12:00 noon. Trinity will then finish the regular season with a three-game series against the South Region's Paine College next weeked. Friday has a twin bill, and Saturday has a single 9-inning game.
