TCJ Eagles Baseball scored 11 runs in 12 innings on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough against NAIA Thomas University. Trinity took early leads in both games of the double-header, but each time Thomas came right back to overtake the Eagles on route to a pair of wins for TU. The final scores were 14-6 and 13-5.
The Eagles totaled 11 runs on 9 hits in the two games, drawing 11 walks in the process. A two-run top of the first in Game 1 gave TCJ an early lead thanks to a Markeinis Brown RBI single and a Richaun Amaro RBI ground ball. After falling behind 4-2, Trinity scored 3 in the second to reclaim the lead. Dominic Gattinella's sacrifice fly, Cooper Scruggs's earrant grounder, Gadriel Burgos's RBI single all led to runs.
Thomas, though, tied it up at 6-6 in the bottom of the third then scored 2 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, and 5 in the sixth to put the game away.
In the nightcap, Trinity again took a 2-0 lead during their first at-bat when Logan McGann and Scruggs each scored on a wild pitch. McGann then scored in the second on an overthrow on a ground ball from Gavin Williams to go up 3-0. Thomas, though, rallied for 3 in the second to tie the score then surged for 9 in the third. Burgos notched a 2-run single in the top of the fourth, but Thomas got 1 more in the bottom half to make the score 13-5. The game ended after TCJ went scoreless in the fifth.
Burgos was 3 for 6 with 3 RBI in the double-header, and McGann was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Willliams was 1 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 1 driven in.
The Eagles will head to Greenville, South Carolina, for a rematch with the South Region's Bob Jones University on Friday and Satuday, February 27 and 28. The two teams will play a single game at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and a double-header at 12:00 noon on Saturday. TCJ will then prepare for the annual Russ-Matt Invitational on March 6, 7, 12, and 13. Trinity will play 6 Northern NAIA teams from around the country over that span beginning with Michigan's Cornerstone University on March 6 and Iowa's Dordt University and Northwestern University on February 7.
