Baseball: Eagles Pitch Two Shutouts in Regular Season Final-Day DH Sweep

Five pitchers combined for 0 runs on 8 hits in 14 innings as TBC Eagles Baseball ended the regular season with a sweep of a double-header against the Mohawks of the USCAA's John Melvin Christian College. The offense broke out late in Game 1 and scored just enough early in Game 2 as the Eagles won 6-0 and 2-0 on Senior Day.

Game 1: Eagles 6, John Melvin Christian 0

Jacob Brigman started and pitched 5 hitless, scoreless innings in earning his seventh win of the season. He walked 3, hit 1, and struck out 6. After walking two men in the first, Brigman stranded those men with a strikeout, his second of the inning. He then retired 15 of the final 17 men he faced and did not allow two base runners again.

Brigman's 6 strikeouts set a new single-season record for a TBC pitcher at 79.

Darren Goeke, Jr. and Caiden Butler each pitched 1 inning in relief, combining for just 1 hit. That hit came with two outs in the top of the seventh when JMCC's Donovan Hawkins bounced a clean single right over the second base bag. Butler then fanned the next hitter to end the game.

The Eagles got their first hit in the fifth after scoring twice in the fourth. With two outs in the fourth, Tyson LaChapelle walked, Nate Nogueras took a pitch off the back, and Blake Bandy walked to load the bases. Seth Reeves was then hit to bring in LaChapelle. A balk then allowed Nogueras to cross and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

LaChapelle drove in Graham Gorman (runner for Onskt, single) with a double in the fifth. Trinity put the game away in the sixth with a three-run rally that featured a run-scoring single from Dominic Gattinella and a two-run double from Logan McGann. Trey Rosado (runner for Goeke, single), Anthony Failla (double), and Gattinella all scored on the hits.

Game 2: Eagles 2, John Melvin Christian 0

Andrew Mohler put up his fifth consecutive outing of not allowing an earned run with five scoreless innings in which he allowed 5 hits with 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. He had two base runners only one time and got out of that second inning with a strikeout and a ground ball. He then allowed only two total base runners over the next three innings. In the fourth, Isaiah Redfern doubled, and when the throw in went astray, Reeves chased down the ball and nailed the runner trying to take third base. That was Mohlers' last base runner.

Drew Billings earned his 10th save of the season with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Billings had the tying runs on base with one out in the seventh but got a strikeout and a ground ball back to the box to end the game.

The Eagles scored twice in the first on a base hit from LaChapelle that scored McGann (walk) and a fielder's choice grounder from Failla that plated Gavin Williams (single).

Senior Day

Seniors Caiden Butler, Anthony Failla, and Jack Musgrave all contributed to the wins as they celebrated their final home game as TBC Eagles.

Butler pitched a scoreless inning, Musgrave caught Brigman for five innings, and Failla drove in a run, scored a run, and made several catches in right, one on the slide that kept the no-hit bid alive and saved a run in Game 1.

South Region Tournament

The Eagles await the final seeding and scheduling of the South Region Tournament, which begins on May 5 and will most likely occur at the University of Fort Lauderdale, who currently holds the first place entering play on Saturday.
