Baseball: Eagles Sweep Paine in South Region Double-Header

Stellar pitching, timely hitting, and a few miscues from the opposition led the Eagles to a pair of wins on Saturday as TBC Eagles Baseball swept the double-header with the South Region's Paine College. The sweep gives the Eagles a 2-1 win in the weekend set and a 4-1 tally over Paine in the season series.

Trinity Baptist is now 9-3 in South Region play.

Game 1: Eagles 5, Paine 2

A four-run second provided enough offense, and three pitchers made those runs stand up to win Game 1 and tie up the series. Ryan Onkst and Gavin Williams each drove in two runs with two outs in that big inning. Onkst doubled to left center with the bases loaded to bring in Nate Nogueras (leadoff double) and Jacob Burke (fielder's choice).

Williams followed with a drive so hard off the left-field wall that the ball rebounded quickly into left fielder Jeury Beato's glove, and Beato held Williams to a single. However, Seth Reeves (walk) and Onskt both crossed on the missile to make the score 4-0.

Paine got a run back in the top of the third on a base hit from Dominique Page, and Trinity answered in their next at bat when Dominic Gattinella brought home Logan McGann (leadoff double) with a very well-struck sacrifice fly to deep center. Paine added one more in the fourth, but on that sacrifice fly from Carmillio Martinez, the Eagles caught another runner trying to advance to third when Gattinella hit cutoff man, Darren Goeke, Jr., who nailed the runner at third with a strike to McGann.

Andrew Mohler earned his second win with a scoreless inning in relief, and Drew Billings pitched three shutout frames of two-hit ball for his ninth save. Starter Preston Leech pitched 3+ innings, allowing two runs on three hits before giving way to Mohler in the fourth.

Game 2: Eagles 3, Paine 1

Jacob Brigman tossed his sixth complete game of the season in earning his sixth win. Brigman allowed only 1 run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7. He had three 1-2-3 innings, including the seventh, and ended the game with his seventh strikeout. He retired 9 in a row through Innings 2, 3, and 4.

The Eagles benefitted from a pair of throwing errors after loading the bases on three consecutive walks with 1 out in the fourth. The first came on Tyson LaChapelle's grounder that could have ended the inning via a 4-6-3 double play. Paine got the out at second, but the low throw to first went astray, allowing Reeves and Nogueras to score and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Burke followed with a grounder toward second, and that throw also went wild, allowing pinch runner Graham Gorman to cross the plate for an insurance run.

Paine's run came on a leadoff home run from Mason Roundtree in the top of the second. That blast was Brigman's only blemish.

[The Eagles Praise God with "Victory in Jesus" after the sweep.]
