Baseball: Eagles Play Tough but Fall to Two NAIA Teams
TBC Eagles Baseball welcomed Florida Memorial University and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College as the guests for the 2025 Bold City Classic. The Eagles played tough but fell to the two NAIA competitors, who both used strong bullpen help to protect their leads.
FMU won the first game against TBC 7-3, and ABAC won the final game with the Eagles 3-1. In between, Abraham Baldwin defeated FMU 16-3.
Game 1: Florida Memorial 7, Eagles 3
The Eagles started to rally from behind in the bottom of the fourth after FMU scored the game's first six runs. Darren Goeke, Jr. beat out on infield single to the first baseman; Anthony Failla (courtesy runner for Larson Lott, walk) scored from third for a Goeke RBI. On the same play, an overthrow allowed Seth Reeves (single) to race home from second and make the score 6-2.
An inning later, Graham Gorman (hit by pitch) scored on a designed play in which Gavin Williams (hit by pitch) allowed himself to get caught between first and second. Williams avoid the tag long enough for Gorman to cross the plate to make the score 6-3.
FMU reliever Roberto Lamour, however, finished the game with three stellar innings of one-run ball to preserve the win.
Goeke was 3 for 3 with 1 RBI at the plate; he also pitched 4 innings in relief, allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3.
[Darren Goeke. Jr. hit and pitched very well for the Eagles on Tuesday.]
Ryan Onkst was 2 for 2, and Dominic Gattinella also hit safely for the Eagles.
Game 2: Abraham Baldwin 3, Eagles 1
The lone run came in the fourth when Gattinella walked with the bases loaded to bring in Williams, who started the inning with a base hit. The score was 2-1 at that point, but Abraham Baldwin added a insurance run in the fifth to put up the final score.
The Eagles got hits from Williams and Onkst, but many well-struck balls found gloves.
Starter Jacob Brigman has another solid outing: 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 4K. Preston Leech and Drew Billings combined for 2.1 innings of hitless, scoreless ball with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
[Preston Leech fanned 3 in his 1.2 innings of work.]
