Baseball: Eagles’ Double-Digit Rally Leads to Win over New College of Florida
For the second time this season, TBC Eagles Baseball forged a double-digit inning that led to victory. This time, the big inning turned a two-run deficit into an eight-run lead, and the Eagles finished with a win, 13-7 over the Banyans of NAIA New College of Florida.
As they came to bat in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles trailed 5-3. Logan McGann led off with a perfectly-placed bunt single down the third base line. Ryan Onkst followed with a line drive into right, and Gavin Williams walked to load the bases.
Larson Lott was hit by a pitch to bring in McGann. Jacob Brigman greeted the new pitcher with a ground ball that was misplayed and scored both Onkst and Williams to put TBC ahead to stay. Dominic Gattinella (infield single), Seth Reeves (bases-loaded walk), Blake Bandy (sacrifice fly), and McGann (infield single) all drove in runs in succession, and the Eagles led 10-5.
The rally concluded with Williams bringing in two more on a double and Brigman singling home the final run of the inning.
The rally benefitted Andrew Mohler, who earned the win in relief. Mohler entered with two outs in the top of the fifth, and after his first batter reached and brought in a run, he induced a flyout to stop the Banyans.
Mohler pitched 3.1 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs on 3 hits; he did not walk a batter and struck out 2. Preston Leech pitched the ninth to close out the game. Gavin Comer started with 3 innings, and Noah Durden pitched 1.2.
The Eagles started their scoring in the first when Brigman's groundout scored McGann (single). A fielding error and an overthrow on the same play off Nate Nogueras's ground ball allowed Jacob Burke (runner for Lott, hit batsman) and Onkst (single) to cross the plate and give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
NCF scored single runs in each of the first five innings, taking advantage of a triple and free bases to the leadoff man in each of those innings; all five of those men scored. They added a two-run double from Landon Morrison in the eighth.
The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon. The Eagles will then travel to NAIA Thomas University for two on Tuesday before preparing for their first weekend of play at the annual Russ-Matt invitational in Orlando. TBC will play NAIA teams from Bethel University Indiana on February 28 and Valley City State University (North Dakota) on Saturday, March 1. Three more at the Russ-Matt Invitational will follow on March 7 and 8.
