Baseball: Goeke, Nogueras Lead Eagles to Win in Split with Bob Jones

Darren Goeke, Jr and Nate Nogueras each drove in three runs as TBC Eagles Baseball rebounded from a 7-3 loss to Bob Jones University in Game 1 to earn a split of the Friday night twin bill with an 8-3 win in the nightcap. Jacob Brigman earned his third win of the season in Game 2 by going the distance, and the Eagles used a big third inning to put the game away.

Game 2: Eagles 8, Bob Jones 3

In that third inning, Goeke and Nogueras both had two-run singles. Goeke's came with two on and nobody out. He bounced one into right to score Dominic Gattinella (courtesy runner for Ryan Onkst, single) and Gavin Williams (single) after the two stole third and second. TBC loaded the bases one out later, and Nogueras lined a fastball down the left field line to drive in Goeke and Tyson LaChapelle (single). That hit made the score 6-0.

[Darren Goeke: 2 for 3, R, RBI in the Game 2 win]

The inning concluded with two more runs on RBI singles from Jacob Burke and Logan McGann, and the Eagles led 8-0.

[Nate Nogueras: 4 for 5, BB, R, 5 RBI in Friday's double-header]

The Bruins scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth after miscues opened the door. A ground ball from David Twiddy brought in one run, and another scored on a dropped throw. Bryson French hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the final run. Brigman allowed a single and a walk afterward then stuck out the ninth man of the inning to end the rally.

Brigman then allowed one base runner in each of the final three innings; he picked one off, his second of the game, and got two double plays in support. He ended the game by getting a chopper to first, and LaChapelle tagged the batter-runner for the final out.

Brigman allowed only 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 8 in his second consecutive complete game win.

Goeke and Nogueras each drove in a run in their first at bat; Goeke's hit was a single, and Nogueras's was a double. McGann and Lott scored the two runs.

Game 1: Bob Jones 7, Eagles 3

Trailing 7-1 as they came up in the sixth, the Eagles rallied for two. Nogueras drove in Lachapell (walk) and Graham Gorman (walk). They had a chance for more before the inning ended then got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but BJU's Jason Quillin, who entered in the sixth and ended the threat, stopped the potential seventh-inning rally without a run scoring to earn a save for winner Mac Carroll (5.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 BB, 6 K).

After Bob Jones scored in the first, Onkst made a trip around the bases with a single, a stolen base, a passed ball, and a wild pitch to tie the score.

Bob Jones then got home runs from Cody Kirkpatrick (solo) and Conley Burk (two-run shot) over the next two innings to help build that 7-1 lead.
