Baseball: Solid Pitching Takes Eagles into Extra Innings at Thomas

Taking on a high-powered offensive lineup, TBC Eagles Baseball got solid pitching performances from all who took the mound on Tuesday. The Eagles visited NAIA Thomas University for a double-header and gave the Sun Conference foe two tough battles. Thomas came away with both wins, but they were not easy, and it took the Nighthawks extra innings in Game 2.

Game 2: Thomas 4, Eagles 3 (8 Innings)

In his first collegiate start, freshman Austin Bailey pitched 4.1 solid innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 5 and striking out 1 against a team that averages 7 runs per game in mainly the NAIA Sun Conference. His final 2.1 innings were scoreless with only 1 hit allowed.

Michael Cardenas entered in the bottom of the fifth with 1 on and 1 out and quickly got a strikeout and groundout before pitching a scoreless, hitless sixth.

Trinity took the lead in the top of the second when Colin Sepulveda drove in David Hickey (hit by pitch) and Seth Reeves drove in Jordan Fernandez (walk) with base hits. Reeves eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.

Thomas, though, tied the score in the bottom half on a base hit and a sacrifice fly. The two pitching staffs did not allow a run for the rest of regulation. Thomas's Elias Garcia walked it off with a base hit in the bottom of the 8th for the win.

Game 1: Thomas 5, Eagles 1

Jacob Burke's RBI single in the fifth put the Eagles on the board, but Thomas's Brad Peacock held TBC to only that 1 run on 4 hits through 4.2 innings.

Burke had 2 of Trinity's 7 hits as did Logan McGann. Ryan Onkst, Gavin Williams, and Reeves also hit safely. In the final 5 innings, the pitching combination of Andrew Mohler, Joseph Labas, and Dominic Gattinella allowed just 1 run on only 2 hits.
