Baseball: Offense Sets Season High with 20 Runs in Win over Voorhees
The offense exploded for 20 runs using both their bats and their patience in defeating NAIA Voorhees University on Friday afternoon. The Eagles scored all 20 runs in innings 4 and 7 through 9 and totaled 13 hits while drawing 15 walks overall on the day, winning the first of a three-game series 20-6.
Seth Reeves and Jordan Fernandez led the offense with a combined 6-for-7 performance. Reeves was 3-for-3; he also drew a walk, drove in a run, and scored three times. Fernandez was 3 for 4 with a walk, a run scored, and a run driven in.
Seven teammates also hit safely: Ryan Onkst, Zakori Ross, Gavin Williams, David Hickey, Nate Nogueras, Jacob Brigman, and Jacob Burke.
After three scoreless innings, the Eagles scored 8 times in the top of the fourth. Reeves started the rally with a run-scoring single. Logan McGann's ground ball brought in Fernandez. Onskt and Dominic Gattinella each drew bases-loaded walks. Williams hit a sacrifice fly. Hickey and Fernandez each doubled in a run. All this came in succession.
Voorhees totaled 5 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but TBC answered in the seventh with 3 of their own on Onskt's RBI single, Musgrave's bases-loaded walk, and Williams's run-scoring grounder.
The offense continued with nine more runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined.
Starter Michael Cardenas pitched 5 innings for the win, and only the last of five runs allowed was earned. Cardenas allowed 5 hits while walking 5 and fanning 7.
Andrew Mohler earned a save with four innings in relief, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1.
Patience at the plate contributed to all four big innings. Onkst walked 3 times while Gattinella, Williams, Burke, and Colin Sepulveda each walked twice. The Eagles totaled 15 walks at the plate.
The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday with the first pitch coming at 12:00 noon EDT. A home series with USCAA Atlantis University follows on April 12 and 13. After an April 16 twin bill at NAIA Thomas University, the Eagles will host South Region rival Bob Jones University for three games on April 19 and 20.
