Baseball: Eagles Go 11 Innings in Russ-Matt Opener vs. Valley City State
TBC Eagles Baseball erased a three-run deficit, and Jacob Brigman was stellar in relief to force extra innings. However, after each team scored in the 10th, Valley City State University (Valley City, North Dakota) won it in the 11th on a single.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Eagles rallied for a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the score at 3-3.
David Hickey walked to open the top of the fourth and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch. In the fifth, Jordan Fernandez drove in the tying runs with a two-out base hit into center that brought in both Ryan Onkst (single) and Hickey (hit by pitch).
Jacob Brigman entered in relief in the bottom of the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings through the ninth. His final line reads 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 8 K. Starter Jose Michel pitched the first 5+ effective innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on only 2 hits while walking 4 and fanning 3.

In the top of the 10th, Seth Reeves laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Parker Laffrey (lead-off double) to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. However, VCSU's Hunter Logan singled in Anthony Madsen with the tying run. Kellen Skruggs drove in Harrison Mertz with the game winner in the 11th.
VCSU got single runs in each of the first three innings before the Eagles made their comeback. Five VCSU pitchers combined for 4 runs allowed on 6 hits, 9 walks, and 18 strikeouts.
The Eagles will play two against NAIA Lawrence Technological University (Southfield, Michigan) on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST. TBC will then return to Auburndale next weekend for a double-header with NAIA Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan) on Friday and single games with NAIA teams Aquinas College (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Rochester University (Rochester Hills, Michigan) on Saturday.
