Florida National
TBC Eagles Baseball finished a four-game series with the Conquistodaors of NAIA Florida National University with a double-header on Saturday. The Eagles had a pair of two-running innings, but FNU had a three-run rally in reach game to win both by the same score of 7-3.
Game 1: FNU 7, Eagles 3
In the bottom of the first, Gavin Williams doubled to left to drive in Graham Gorman, who opened the game by drawing a base on balls, to tie the score at 1-1. The Eagles had more opportunities in the inning and knocked out the starting pitcher, but FNU reliever Juan Pablo Arellano got out of the jam.
The Eagles took the lead at 2-1 in the fourth when Onkst doubled in Logan McGann, who was running for catcher Drew Gifford (walk).
Florida National, however, scored twice in the top of the fifth to go ahead 3-2, but Trinity tied it up again a half inning later thanks to a successful squeeze bunt single from Gifford that brought home Parker Laffrey (walk). FNU's Yordangel Gonzalez followed with a solo home run in the sixth, and the Conquistadors added three more in the seventh to close out the game.
Starting pitcher Jacob Brigman was solid for 4.1 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. Andrew Mohler entered in the seventh and stopped the FNU rally for a scoreless inning to his credit.
Game 2: FNU 7, Eagles 3
Playing from behind, the Eagles scored a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Seth Reeves was hit by a pitch with two outs in the fifth, and the Eagles cashed in the opportunity. Gorman's single to right allowed Reeves to advance from first to third, and Reeves scampered home on a wild pitch with Onkst batting.
One inning later, Laffrey singled and stole second. Brigman's ground ball got through and allowed Laffrey to score. Pinch hitter Daniel Marinacci doubled Brigman to third, and Jacob Burke drove in Brigman with a ground ball.
Florida National scored 2 in the top of the second inning and 3 in the third to open the lead before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Brandon Hoang pitch three terrific innings in relief, allowing just 1 unearned run on 2 hits and 2 walks.
